December 11, 2006 -- Cypress Semiconductor Corp. has introduced its next-generation Programmable Radio-System-on-a-Chip. The single-chip PRoC LP integrates the WirelessUSB LP 2.4-GHz transceiver with the low-cost enCoRe II 8-bit Flash microcontroller (MCU). PRoC LP simplifies coding and board layout to cut design time and reduce board space requirements for small form-factor wireless Human Interface Devices (HID) such as mice, presenter tools and RF remote controls.
PRoC LP offers a reduced component count versus competing solutions, reducing the overall bill of materials (BOM) for HID applications. The device uses patented frequency agile Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technology to offer best-in-class interference immunity for wireless systems operating in the worldwide 2.4-GHz ISM band, making it ideal for crowded RF environments.
PRoC LP is available in a compact, 40-pin QFN package. The in-system reprogrammable Flash-based MCU enables last-minute firmware changes and eliminates the need for external EEPROM to store binding parameters. This highly integrated wireless solution also reduces component count by operating off a single crystal and by integrating voltage converters and passives, thus lowering system cost and board layout complexity. PRoC LP delivers up to a 1-Mbps data-rate, -97-dBm receive sensitivity, and functions at 0.87mA average current to extend battery life in HID applications to one year.
Cypress's PRoC LP offers an feature set that enables superior interference immunity, low BOM costs, higher data rate applications, and faster time-to-market for dongles/bridges, mice, presenter tools, and remotes, as well as other simple, multi-point-to-point wireless applications. Featuring a radio transceiver plus digital baseband on a single chip, it operates between 1.8 and 5.25V, using advanced power-saving techniques to extend battery life in devices such as wireless mice. This combination of low power consumption, DSSS interference immunity and low cost make it ideal for wireless HID applications.
PRoC LP also incorporates the user-friendly KISSBind feature, which lets a user intuitively link a wireless peripheral to the desired host by simply bringing them in very close proximity with one another, thus lowering customer support calls.
Pricing and Availability
Cypress is currently sampling the PRoC LP CYRF69103 for mice and other peripherals and the PRoC LP CYRF69213 for USB bridges/dongles, both in 40-pin QFN packages. Full production quantities of both will be available in February 2007. Pricing starts at under $2.00 each in 100K-unit quantity.
